Halloween Book Tag

Happy Friday bookish people! I hope you are all having a good day today. I am bringing you my answers to a Halloween Book Tag, I found it last year and I was curious to see if any of my answers would have changed between now and then.

1. carving pumpkins: what book would you carve up and light on fire – A Novel Murder by E C Nevin

I did not enjoy this book, actually I DNF’d it after only a couple of chapters, honestly I could not do a cosy crime novel with a main character who is so self deprecating, I couldn’t continue.

2. trick or treat: a character who is a treat and one who is a trick – Adena in Powerless, Eli from Vicious

Adena is one of the sweetest characters in any books I have read and she did not deserve her ending, on the other hand Eli from vicious started my obsession with morally grey characters and he did deserve the ending he got.

3. candy corn: what book is always sweet – What Would Jane Austen Do?

This book is one of few romance novels that I have actually enjoyed. It merged classic romance of Jane Austen with a light, fluffy, funny, romance plot.

4. ghosts: a character you would like to visit you as a ghost – Ferrius Parfax from Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell

She takes no nonsense and she will give you the harsh truths that you need to hear.

5. Dressing in costume: a character you would want to be for a day – Violet Sorrengail from Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

I had a stall at London Film and Comic Con July 2025, and I dressed as Violet Sorrengail for that. First time ever wearing leather trousers – they’re not the easiest to wear! But I thought it was great fun to dress as a favourite character for a day or two.

6. blood and gore: a book so creepy you had to take a break – A Gift of Poison by Bella Ellis

This book has a big focus on the dead coming back to take revenge on the living and I made the mistake of reading it at night, I thought the book was excellent but it was creepy.

Back To School Book Tag!

Happy Friday Bookish people! I hope you’re all having a good day today! It is September and that means children are going back to school. So, I thought it would be fun to do a back to school themed book tag challenge. I found this one on monstrumology.com

English – name your favourite authors (or books) writing style: Erin Morgenstern

Particularly the whimsical, lyrical writing from The Starless Sea. One of my favourite books ever.

Maths – a book that made you frustrated: Ulysses by James Joyce

Parts of this book have no punctuation. Need I say more.

Social Studies/History – your favourite book from a different time period: A Little Princess

I have always loved this book, reading it is a very nostalgic experience for me. It is sad and heartwarming in equal measure.

Art – your favourite book with pictures: The Hatmakers by Tamzin Merchant.

This book follows Cordelia Hatmaker and her friends as they discover the secrets of their world and this is complimented by beautiful illustrations in the book and on the cover. It is stunning.

Drama – a book you would love to turn into a movie: the Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco

It is so gothic and atmospheric, Victorian London, a bit of murder and mystery and romance. I would be front of the queue to see this as a film.

Music – name a character you think would have the same musical taste as you: Evangeline Fox from Once Upon A Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

I think she is quite whimsical and would like songs from musicals and disney, maybe a bit of country all of which I like.

Lunch – a food you would love to try: castle banquets

Honestly, I don’t mind which one, but definitely castle banquets. They are always described as lavish and covered in gravy. Anyone who knows me knows how much I enjoy gravy. I would have it on everything.

Bus ride home – a book or author that is relaxing: Spellslinger series by Sebastien de Castell.

I don’t know what it is about these books, there’s magic, rebels, high stakes, murder, secrets and yet the whole tone is soft and comedic and just every time I think of it I feel calm and relaxed.

Extra credit – a book someone else told you to read and wound up enjoying: Lireal by Garth Nix.

It was suggested I read this, although they did not tell me it was not the first book in a series, because they had read it and liked it but they thought I would love it. Honestly to begin with I didn’t believe them, the synopsis didn’t hook me, but once I started reading I loved it.

Book Review: Way of the Argosi by Sebastien De Castell

Happy Friday bookish people! I hope you are all doing well. Today I am bringing you my book review for Way of the Argosi by Sebastien De Castell.

Have any of you read this series? Or the Spellslinger series? Let me know what you thought of it if you have. The Spellslinger series is one of my all time favourite series’.

Blurb/Synopsis:

My Review:

This book is a prequel novel to the Spellslinger series, following Ferrius Parfax when she was younger and what events made her the way she is. Usually I am not the biggest fan of a prequel but this one I loved.
To begin with I didn’t like young Ferrius, she was a bit silly and fueled by her anger, rightfully so in the circumstances. But I enjoyed getting to follow her on her journey to being a different person and all the people she met along the way.
One thing I really loved about this book was seeing the parallels between Ferrius and her relationship with Durell compared to Kellen and his relationship to Ferrius in the Spellslinger books. It was like a mirror image and it’s those kind of touches that made this book brilliant.

The Book Boyfriends Book Tag

Happy Friday bookish people! I hope you are all doing well today. Seeing as it is Valentine’s Day today, what else could I bring you except a post celebrating some of my favourite book boyfriends. I have to say, it was hard to choose. I made a list of them all and then picked the best ones for the questions and it was a long list.

I found this Tag on Got Meghan’s Blog if you want to check out how they answered the tag.

  1. The Most Romantic Boyfriend: LORD PHILLIP STANTON from The Lady in the Tower by Marie Louise Jenson. Phillip is a bit of a rogue for most of the book but by far out of my fave book boyfriends he would be the most romantic. He is a Lord in the Tudor period brought up on chivalry and how he should treat a lady.
  2. A Dark and Moody Bad Boy With A Good Side: KAI from Powerless by Lauren Roberts. He is the epitome of dark and moody especially for the first half of the book but deep down he’s a softie, he just doesn’t want everyone to know that.
  3. Paranormal Boyfriend: WRATH from Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco. I wasn’t sure who to put to start with then I remembered, he’s a prince of hell so a demon of sorts. Which I am saying counts, okay.
  4. Boy You’d Be Friends With Benefits With: JULIAN SANTOS from Caraval by Stephanie Garber. Now, I wouldn’t be friends with benefits at all but for the purpose of this tag it would be Julian. I love him and he had to make it onto this list somewhere, so I put him here because he dresses like a cross between a circus performer and a pirate.
  5. Your Soul Mate: THOMAS CRESSWELL from Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri maniscalco. You can’t convince me otherwise. He is my favourite book boyfriend by a mile.
  6. Boyfriend You’d Venture Anywhere with: NATHANIAL HAWTHORNE from Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. He’s magic, it would make life interesting.
  7. Boyfriend You Want to be Stranded on a Desert Island With: KELLEN ARGOSI from Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell. He literally spends most of the series trekking across a desert trying to survive so he must have picked up some skills from all of that which could help us.
  8. Most Badass Boyfriend: RHYSAND from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J Maas. I don’t think I need to explain this one, if you’ve read the series then I am sure you will understand.

Summer Book Recommendations

Happy Friday bookish people! I hope you’re all having a good day today.

Seeing as it is now fully summertime I thought it would be fun to think back on the books I have read and give a few summer recs!

Dead man’s Folly by Agatha Christie

This is my second favourite Agatha Christie novel, second to Halloween Party, and there are village fairs and secrets and I adore this book.

Lying About Last Summer by Sue Wallman

It is literally in the title, and it is a great, twisty mystery. I know a lot of people like to read thrillers and mysteries in the summer and this would be a great choice.

What Would Jane Austen Do by Linda Corbett

This is a nice, sweet, summery romance novel and I think it is set in summer because it features a literary festival and they are mostly held in the summer months if they are outside.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

This book is a sweet, cosy fantasy with some romance and it feels like a good summer read.

Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell

Even the colours on the covers of this series scream series, same as Vampire Academy the series gets dark in some places but it is a brilliant fantasy series great for the summer.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

This is a nostalgic one for me, I love this series and it is a young adult vampire series, to me it just feels like a summer series, it gets dark in places but the characters and their humour keep things light.

Happy Friday bookish People! So, it is April already and with that it comes time to share my TBR for the month with you.

Recently, I have been focusing on reading mysteries and crime fiction and they’re all blending into one now so I read some historical fiction and some non-fiction in March and then I went to Gollanczfest and now I am completely in the fantasy mood. To read it and to write it. So, as you can probably tell my April TBR is full of fantasy!

I thought it would be fun today to do the Valentine’s Day Book Tag that I found on Words About Words Blog.

  1. What book have you been given as a gift that you loved? I was given the special edition slipcase for ACOTAR for christmas the year before last, it is so beautiful that I don’t want to read that edition though, I will just read my paperback edition.
  2. What book would you like to give as a gift to someone else? It depends, I’ve given my Mum Elise Kova books as gifts before because I know she loves her books but for others even though I know they like reading I wouldn’t know where to start with gifting them a book.
  3. If you could gift a random person an non-bookish item what would it be? I would say maybe an experience, something that wouldn’t end up on a shelf gathering dust.
  4. If you could gift a random person a bookish item what would you give them? I would say probably a bookmark because everyone needs one of those.
  5. What do you say when a person gives you a gift you don’t like? I have to be polite and say thank you but also watch my face, because I know I am quite expressive and give it away so I have to be careful.
  6. Mention a book based around valentine’s day? I don’t know any specifically for Valentine’s but Plus One by Kelsey Rodkey is excellent
  7. Mention a film you love to watch on Valentine’s Day? Again not on the actual day but my favourite romcom is either Dirty Dancing or Pretty Woman.
